Belles Landing 9/17/12Special Angleton Rotary Club Meeting – Sep 10 2012
Guest Speaker: Historian and River Boat Captain: Capt. Mike Leebron
What a great event and opportunity to take a trip back in time to the 1800’s along the Brazos. After a short historical overview by Captain Mike (in the bar) the Belle departed "Belle's Landing" and headed up the Brazos River along the locations of the Willow Glen Plantation on the East bank (originally known as Brit Bailey's Plantation) and, on the West bank, the Varner-Hogg Plantation which was also known as "Patton's Place." The colorful lives and contributions of these early settlers were discussed as well as a review of the historic significance that they made to our Texas history. Other highlights of the trip included: · Special surprise guests, Michael Roytan and his pup Maggie. For all concerned, we were lucky that these two intrepid travelers’ were approaching Belle’s Landing after kayaking more than 600 down the Brazos River, just as we were starting our little evening cruise. How lucky was that? Actually we really need to thank Assistant Governor Linda Nagel for running a bit late, otherwise who knows the Headline might have read “Rotary Club Cruise Sinks Kayak !!!”. However in true Rotary spirit, Michael and pup were invited to join out expedition and off we went - full speed ahead. · A tour of the Aycock Crews House Bed & Breakfast (south of Belle’s Landing on the western shore). · Dinner & fellowship back at Belle’s Landing catered by Scotts BBQ. This activity was attended by members and friends of the Danbury, Sweeny, Lake Jackson (After 5) and of course our Angleton Rotary Club.

CLUB ASSEMBLYOur Club President, Yvonne Mintz, led our Club Assembly on Monday, July 18th. Reach Within to Embrace Humanity is Rotary's focus for the upcoming year. With this in mind, Rotary International President, Kalyan Banerjee, has requested each Rotarian smile at least two strangers every day. As a club we will also be looking into more "Hands On" service activities. Yvonne had us brainstorm ideas that would accomplish this.
